Evolving Downtown Landscape Brightens Hotel Outlook
Amid Some International Travel Headwinds
Alamo City exhibiting slow but steady hospitality growth. The local hotel sector began the year strong with international deplanements at San Antonio International Airport up by over 20 percent year over year in January. While rising geopolitical tensions may weigh on cross border travel in the near term, the metro’s well-established tourism attractions, including Six Flags, SeaWorld and The Alamo, will continue to underpin domestic visitation. Looking beyond this year, several major construction projects are set to enhance the metro’s tourism appeal as well. Government authorities and the San Antonio Spurs have partnered on a proposed downtown sports and entertainment complex that would host the NBA team, joining a separate nearby MLB Minor League stadium project. University of Texas at San Antonio is also aiming to increase its downtown campus student enrollment, bringing more families to the area for visits. This trend, together with redirected sports tourism and new entertainment options, are poised to increase hotel demand.
