Canada Return of Students
Return of In-Person Learning Bodes Well for
Montreal Economy and Commercial Real Estate
Education is an economic cornerstone in Québec. Montreal is home to 18 post-secondary institutions, all within an eight kilometer radius of one another. These schools combined for roughly 250,000 students, the highest proportion in North America. Of these students, roughly 20 per cent are from areas outside of Montreal. This means that during the global health crisis, nearly 50,000 individuals likely did not return to the metro, due to the cancellation of in-person learning. Nonetheless, with pandemic restrictions being lifted, all education institutions welcomed back students for the first time since 2019. This influx of returning students not only bolsters the metro’s economy, but also has positive impacts on the commercial real estate market.
