Skilled Nursing Sector Piquing Interest of Private Investors

Skilled nursing facilities retooling operations. The long-awaited wave of baby boomers entering their later years along with the increased medical attention they will require point to a solid outlook for skilled nursing facilities amid several headwinds currently being faced. Changes to the reimbursement structure along with rising labor costs have weighed on operations, though as providers work to create more efficiencies, property performance will trend higher. Structural changes in the healthcare market have hospitals keeping patients for shorter stretches and then transferring them to long-term care facilities, which is a positive sign going forward. Facilities have been challenged lately with low occupancy, though it appears rates found a bottom this past year and may make headway as more dilapidated stock is removed from inventory.
